Exhibition “6 EUROS BUDGET” ARTISTIC PRACTICES AND PRECARIOUSNESS

Swedish artists are hereby invited to submit proposals for 6 EUROS budget: Artistic practices and precariousness. A collaborative exhibition between Spanish and Swedish artists that will take place in Supermarket Art Fair at Kulturhuset (Stockholm, Sweden).

With this call, we want to convey that although much of our society has adopted the idea that art and artists are economically prosperous; this is on the contrary a more and more precarious context. It is also important to draw attention to the need to change these circumstances, and develop more flexible working structures that support creativity and observe more closely the needs and realities of contemporary artists. We see this open call as a proposal to increase the awareness of this situation, of the need to denounce it and to improve it if we want to be able to think the present.
A first edition of this project, took place in Off Limits, Madrid (2010). The aim of this second edition is to generate a debate around the Spanish and the Swedish artistic context.

Cabello/Carceller. A creative demand

What position do we artists occupy in the current social context? Where does art stand in it? Those of us who believe that art is still necessary today can’t help but wonder why cultural institutions avoid art production and designate almost their entire budget for cultural management and heritage conservation. Art centers try to maintain their exhibitions schedules in order to continue being funded by public money and to justify their standing before potential voters. But they do not provide the proper conditions for art production and research; nor do they take into account the artists themselves when calculating artistic production. When they do, artists are paid so little with relation to their actual work/time investment that they are transformed into an endless trainee, forced into continuous precariousness. When you examine this situation from a distance, sometimes it seems that our administrators prefer to live in and fantasize about the past rather than reflect on and act for the present. Moreover, the existing gap between the funds used to purchase and exhibit art from outside contexts (including its production in some cases) as opposed to art produced within them, creates an imbalance. Is it fear of creative freedom and its consequences? Maybe.... Because where there is freedom there is change....

But “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”… maybe we could say that, based on this situation, artists are developing a new genre of art – one better suited to the current economic crisis – which ironically gives a different meaning to the term “art povera”, a more literal one.

With this call for art, we want to convey that although much of our society has adopted the idea that art and artists are economically prosperous; this is on the contrary a more and more precarious context. However, it is important to point out that we are not facing a creative crisis, but rather, a chronic budget crisis. The few structural changes that are taking place are not up to the standards of the democratization of art practices that we have seen in previous decades nor do they hold up against the current complex circumstances. We believe that it is possible to work in difficult conditions and that when you have something to say, it can be done with next to nothing. It is important to transmit that we have the ability to generate projects and ideas, even under less favorable conditions. But it is also important to draw attention to the need to change these circumstances, and develop more flexible working structures that support creativity and observe more closely the needs and realities of contemporary artists. We see this open call as a proposal to increase the awareness of this situation, of the need to denounce it and to improve it if we want to be able to think the present.

GUIDELINES

1. Object.

The object of this call is the selection of a minimum of 6 artistic projects to be exhibit in Supermarket Art Fair as part of a collaborative exhibition called “Budget: 6 Euros: Artistic practices and precariousness”.
The exhibition will consist of proposals developed by Spanish artists in its first edition in Madrid and others of Swedish artists selected from this call.

2. Target audience.

Individual artists and artistic groups can take part in this call.

Applications are submitted digitally. The projects, with a maxim length of 5 sheets should include:
* A brief summary of the project (10 lines).
* Name and personal details of the sender to contact.
* Detailed description of the project with the necessary supporting graphic information.
* Detailed production bugdet. The maxim production that will be provided to each selected project will be 6€. (Project´s production cost can’t exceed 6€ and its staging should be easy without using elements that could increase the production value).
* Submissions are presented digitally with all the information specified in the previous points in pdf format (texts in doc, videos in avi or mov, sounds in wave or mp3, images in high definition_300pp).

3. Works’ characteristics.

* The subject matter will be free. Submitted artworks may fall into a wide range of genres associated with art, including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, video, film, performance, design, craft, animation, sound and new media.
* Projects should be unpublished.

5. Decision.

The jury that will select the projects to be exhibit will be composed by Cabello/Carceller (Spanish curators) and Estelle af Malmborg (Swedish curator).
* The call will be resolved before January 15th, 2012.
* The selected projects will be announced to their authors through the e-mail address specified in the contact details of the call.
* The call could be not awarded.

Cabello/Carceller is an artists’ team formed by Helena Cabello and Ana Carceller. They have worked together since 1993, and have expanded their artistic practice through collaborative writing, critical theory, teaching and curatorship. More info

Supermarket Art Fair is an international art fair created and managed by artists. Artist-run galleries and similar artists' initiatives exhibit the latest tendencies in art. Off Limits is an independent cultural space in Madrid that proposes different ways of changing contemporary reality. Its object is to strengthen and promote contemporary artistic creation, to approach contemporary plastic arts to a wide audience and to make easier the development of experimental initiatives. Convocatoria abierta para la participación en una experiencia de creación audiovisual colectiva, dirigida a los colectivos de inmigrantes, que se desarrollará durante el mes de septiembre y octubre en el barrio de Lavapiés.

Hola, estás haciendo una peli:
1 Parte de un guión elaborado por los participantes.
2 No hay director.
3 La función del editor NO es montar la película, sino juntar los planos sin ver el resultado.
4 El guión es colectivo.
5 El texto puede ser interpretado en la lengua que se desee.
6 El estilo interpretativo es totalmente libre.
7 No importa el “rácord” de vestuario, decorado, movimiento, luz, ni de actores.
8 No importa la calidad de la imagen.
9 La iluminación puede ser natural y artificial: es libre.
10 La película se estrenará sin que ninguno de los participantes haya visto el global.

El proyecto se desarrollará en las siguientes fases:

1/ TALLER
Los participantes, convocados a través de diferentes asociaciones del barrio elaborarán en un taller una narración colectiva en base a sus experiencias, su situación social, las causas que les llevaron a inmigrar y los detalles de su vida en la comunidad.

2/ STORY BOARD
El editor desglosa el guión en planos.

3/ RODAJE
Cada participante tendrá como misión rodar un plano de la película. El plano por sí sólo no tiene sentido narrativo, pero unido al resto conforma la historia. El participante grabará en su contexto cotidiano y con las personas de su entorno. Un sencillo diccionario de planos les ayudará a grabar su parte de la película. Además, durante las dos semanas que dure el rodaje, se creará en Off Limits un centro de producción donde recibirán asistencia y podrán resolver dudas.

4/ MONTAJE
Una vez rodados, el editor monta los planos sin cortes y la película está lista para ser proyectada. El resultado es un film con argumento y trama pero con la particularidad de que no hay racord. Escenario y vestuario cambian continuamente. Los actores también. El protagonista en cada plano es un actor distinto, que incluso habla idiomas diferentes. El elemento que te permite entender la historia es la palabra.

5/ PROYECCIÓN DE LA PELICULA
El film será un retrato de la hetereogeniedad de la comunidad. La experiencia puede hacer ver a cada participante cómo son sus vecinos (¿somos distintos? o ¿al final no tanto?), los múltiples modos de resolver una misma propuesta (la grabación de un plano) y les proporcionará una herramienta para articular una "voz", individual y colectiva, generalmente anulada.

Los formatos de grabación son totalmente libres. Cine, videocámara, teléfono móvil, webcam o tomavistas… No importa el formato sino el contenido. La multitud de formatos enriquecerá la plástica del film colectivo.

El objetivo del proyecto es construir, a través de la creación colectiva, herramientas de afirmación de la identidad de los inmigrantes de Lavapiés, facilitando su integración con el resto de vecinos.

Cabello/Carceller. Una denuncia creativa


¿Qué posición ocupamos los artistas en nuestro actual contexto social?¿Qué posición ocupa el arte? Quienes creemos que el arte sigue hoy siendo necesario no podemos dejar de preguntarnos por qué las instituciones culturales eluden la producción de obra y destinan la práctica totalidad de su presupuesto a la gestión cultural y la conservación del patrimonio. Se intenta mantener calendarios expositivos que permitan que los centros continúen siendo financiados con dinero público y que además justifiquen su propia existencia ante posibles votantes, pero no se facilitan las condiciones reales para la producción o la investigación, ni se tiene en cuenta al artista en las condiciones de producción o, cuando se hace, un cálculo prorrateado de sus “salarios”, en relación al tiempo de trabajo que conlleva la realización de los proyectos nos enfrentaría de plano con una circunstancia económica semejante a la de un eterno becario en prácticas. Cuando se analiza esta situación con una cierta distancia, en ocasiones da la sensación de que nuestros administradores prefieren vivir y elucubrar sobre el pasado antes que facilitar un pensar sobre el presente. Otras veces, la percepción de la diferencia presupuestaria que existe entre el dinero empleado para exhibir y comprar arte realizado fuera de nuestros contextos, incluyendo producción en algunos casos, y el arte producido dentro de ellos, causa vértigo. ¿Miedo a la libertad creativa y a sus consecuencias? Quizá sea eso, porque donde hay libertad hay cambios.

Pero no hay mal que por bien no venga, de manera que podríamos decir que los artistas estamos desarrollando en nuestro país un nuevo género -muy adecuado a la actual situación de crisis económica- que proporciona un sentido diferente al término “arte povera”; un sentido más que literal.

Con esta convocatoria queremos poner de manifiesto que, a pesar de que en gran parte de la sociedad permanece asentada la idea de que el arte y los artistas ocupamos un espacio económicamente boyante, se trata de un contexto en el que los modos de hacer están cada vez más extendidamente precarizados. Es importante señalar, sin embargo, que no nos encontramos ante una situación de crisis creativa, sino ante una situación de crisis presupuestaria cronificada<. Los escasos cambios estructurales que van produciéndose no están a la altura de la democratización de las prácticas artísticas que se ha dado en las últimas décadas ni a la de sus complejas circunstancias actuales. Creemos que se puede trabajar en condiciones difíciles y que, cuando se tiene algo que decir, puede hacerse con casi nada. Es importante transmitir que tenemos la capacidad de generar proyectos e ideas aún en las situaciones menos propicias; pero es también importante que llamemos la atención sobre la necesidad de cambiar esas circunstancias e ir construyendo unas estructuras de trabajo y apoyo a la creación más flexibles y próximas a las necesidades y realidades de las y los artistas contemporáneos. Planteamos esta convocatoria como una propuesta abierta desde la consciencia de que esa situación debe mejorar así como de la necesidad de su denuncia si queremos poder pensar el presente.
